Behaviour

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is intelligent and has very easy to learn new things. Though it can’t be trained like a normal dog as it easily looses interest when the same exercise is repeated. The Wolfdog is also very friendly and a good family pet, but it will need a lot of attention, training and long walks every day, and an owner with patience and a firm hand.

As a puppy the Wolfdog is very energetic, and male Wolfdogs tend to be more lively than the females during their first couple of years, which demands a lot of patience from the owner. The Wolfdog doesn’t use the same signals to communicate as normal dogs, therefore it is very important that the owner is aware of its signals and learn to communicate with the puppy as early as possible.

As the Wolfdog is a working breed it needs lots of walking and exercising as well as a lot of training that stimulates the brain, for example Tracking or Dressage.
It makes a good companion beside horse or mountain bike and can also be used for pulling vehicles, like a mountain bike, uphill or help pulling a person who’s jogging or cross country skiing. The Wolfdog loves to work, and therefore needs to have an active owner.

These qualities make the Wolfdog perfect for rescue missions and ever since the beginning of its existence it has been used by the border guard, military, police, fire brigade as well as different rescue teams. But the Wolfdog develops very strong social bond to its owner. This has been a disadvantage discovered when the Wolfdog has been used by for example the fire brigade and therefore they are nowadays not commonly used by fire brigade and military.
